PEER Geoinformation Pillar

WHAT IS PEER?

The PEER network was created in 2001 from seven european research institutes. All PEER partners have a common scope of leading the development of a European Research Area in the environmental sciences, by integrating a broad range of environmental disciplines to provide science-based support for the development of a sustainable European environment. (more informations on the PEER website)

THE PEER GEOINFORMATION PILLAR  (GIP)

To carry out their joint research, the PEER members have agreed to establish topic-oriented pillars in which PEER scientists work together . The geo-Information pillar was created in 2005;

GEOINFORMATION PILLAR MISSION

Promote GI Science to scientific communities including universities, non-profit organisations and society at large by:

- Recognising and supporting scientific excellence in the use of geo-information concepts, methods, and tools through scholarships, awards, educational and joint research project initiatives.

- Partnering with other organisations in Europe to build wider macro-economic benefits towards a regional dimension and greater innovation in GI Science for environmental assessment, monitoring, and modelling.

STRATEGIC GOALS

- Establish the GI PEER Research Hubs as a forum for a scientific network

- Have intra-organisational impacts on the PEER network itself (e.g. sharing resources, exchange of tacit knowledge, changing practices, and cost savings).

- Have intra-organisational impacts on the PEER network itself (e.g. sharing resources, exchange of tacit knowledge, changing practices, and cost savings).

- Demonstrate the adding-value creation of GI PEER in the European and international contexts.

- Raise awareness about the need of scientific research for supporting the role of geo-information in the new governance modes (e.g. e-government, e-policy) for environmental assessment, monitoring, and modelling.
